St. Francis De Sales School, Guwahati, celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India on 15 August 2026 with a vibrant and inspiring programme at the Assembly Ground of the SFS Block. The celebration was graced by Rev. Fr. George Pekkadankuzhiyil, Manager of MSFS Guwahati Province, Rev. Fr. Melvin Parambukattil, Principal of SFS Guwahati, Vice-Principals, Reverend Fathers, teachers, parents, students and the distinguished Chief Guest, Dr. Nilutpal Mahanta.
The programme commenced with the arrival of the distinguished dignitaries , escorted by the NCC Cadets. The school was honoured by the presence of Dr. Nilutpal Mahanta, wildlife biologist, environmental consultant, conservationist and environmental storyteller from Assam, as the Chief Guest. With extensive experience in biodiversity research and conservation, Dr. Mahanta has contributed to wildlife and environmental initiatives and has worked with organisations including WWF-India.
The school also felicitated its Principal, Rev. Fr. Melvin Parambukattil, following which he addressed the gathering. The ceremonial observance of Independence Day continued with the commemoration of 150 years of Vande Mataram, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag and the National Anthem performed by the SFS Boys' Band. The “March of Valour”, presented by the NCC Cadets and the SFS Boys' Band, added grandeur and solemnity to the occasion.
The patriotic spirit continued through “Patriotic Crescendo,” a disciplined and energetic band display by the SFS Boys' Band. A student message by Chayan Kashyap of Class IX-B reflected the thoughts and aspirations of the young generation towards the nation. The youngest members of the school then delighted the audience with “Tiny Feet, Mighty Dreams,” a dance presentation by students of Nursery to Class I.
A special highlight of the celebration was the Prize Distribution Ceremony of Resonance 2026, the Intra-School Parents' Online Competition. Winners of the Solo Singing, Solo Dance and Family Group Singing categories were felicitated by the Vice-Principals, recognising the enthusiasm, creativity and active participation of the school community.
The cultural programme continued with “Blossoms of Bharat” by Classes II and III, “Shaurya Gatha” by Classes VI and VII, and the soulful presentation “Matrabhumi Vandana” by students of Classes VI to VIII. Together, the performances celebrated India's rich cultural heritage, valour, diversity and enduring spirit of unity.
The gathering was further enriched by the inspiring address of Chief Guest Dr. Nilutpal Mahanta, who encouraged the students to become responsible citizens and contribute meaningfully towards building a stronger India.
The celebration concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, school leadership, teachers, parents, staff and students whose collective efforts made the occasion meaningful and memorable. The programme ended with a powerful reminder that the finest tribute to the nation's freedom fighters lies not merely in celebration, but in living with honesty, compassion, responsibility and love for the motherland.
With the resounding spirit of “Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!”, SFS Guwahati reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing young citizens who are knowledgeable, responsible, compassionate and proud contributors to the nation.
